MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in 2020 completed several major components of the LIRR expansion project, which calls for adding a third track from Floral Park to Hicksville, New York.
The project milestones — completed ahead of schedule and under budget — included eliminating five railroad crossings, replacing or modifying several bridges and completing upgrades at three rail stations, LIRR officials said in a press release.
Crews also installed switches for two interlockings and installed electrical substations in Floral Park, Freeport and New Cassel.
Moreover, LIRR expanded the Mid-Suffolk Train Storage Yard to provide additional space to store, maintain, inspect and clean electric rail cars. The yard features 11 additional tracks, each with capacity for a 12-car train set, MTA officials said.
This year, LIRR plans to eliminate rail crossings at South 12th Street, Willis Avenue and Main Street; replace the Denton Avenue bridge; partially open Elmont Station; and upgrade the Carle Place and Merillon stations.
When the LIRR expansion project is completed, eight railroad grade crossings will have been eliminated, seven bridges replaced or expanded, five stations rebuilt, 10 miles of a third track installed, and power substations and interlockings built.
