On April 22, MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and MTA Metro-North Railroad exercised a $206 million option with Bombardier Transportation for 120 M-7 electric multiple unit commuter-rail cars.

Since 1999, Bombardier has received orders for 678 and 300 M-7 from LIRR and Metro-North, respectively, bringing the contract value to $1.9 billion. If LIRR and Metro-North exercise remaining options, Bombardier would provide the agencies a total of 1,266 cars valued at $2.4 billion.

More than 250 M-7s currently are operating in revenue service, with the mean distance between failure averaging 200,000 miles, according to Bombardier. Featuring IGBT propulsion, energy efficient dynamic braking, and on-board monitoring and diagnostic systems, the stainless steel cars are replacing the agencies’ 40-year-old electric rail cars.
