Massachusetts Department of Transportation Secretary Richard Davey recently joined state and local officials to mark the completion of a $22 million project to upgrade the Science Park/West End Station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Green Line.

The project, which altered the station to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, reopened Nov. 5 after being closed for six months, MBTA officials said in a prepared statement.

Upgrades included the installation of two elevators to provide access from a new street-level lobby to the train platforms at the top of the viaduct, as well as enhanced lighting and additional surveillance cameras. In addition, the platform canopy roof was replaced, elevated platforms were installed, and interior and exterior stairs were reconstructed.

Construction began in May 2010 and was scheduled to take two years to complete; however, the project was finished seven months ahead of schedule, MBTA officials said.

Eighty percent of the project’s costs were funded with federal dollars and the remainder with a MBTA revenue bond match.

Science Park/West End Station originally opened in 1954 and serves about 2,100 riders daily.
