The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in 2025 completed a commuter-rail extension, restored full speed sections on two subway "T" lines and extended weekend service hours on all subway lines, among other accomplishments.
The transit authority shared highlights of its 2025 achievements in a press release issued yesterday.
In March 2025, MBTA launched the South Coast Rail Service, a new commuter-rail line. The more than $1 billion extension project brought passenger-rail service to Taunton, Freetown, New Bedford, Middleboro and Fall River for the first time in 65 years, MBTA officials said.
MBTA's T Red and Orange lines began operating at full speed in March and August 2025, respectively, following the completion of major maintenance of way work and track rehabilitation. Additionally, all eight subway lines started offering service one hour later on weekend nights in 2025.
Also last year, the MBTA began issuing citations for fare evasion, hired more than 1,900 employees, completed accessibility improvements, began installing derailment prevention equipment on the Green Line, expanded a reduced fare program and hosted the American Public Transportation Association's annual TRANSform Conference in September.
