MBTA lands $2 million grant for station parking lot upgrade

Last week, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development awarded the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) a $2 million grant to build a new parking lot at the Littleton commuter-rail station in Boston.

The grant is part of $11 million in station improvements, which are included in the $211 million Fitchburg Commuter-Rail Line project. That project is being funded by federal stimulus funds.

Later this month, the MBTA will use the grant to acquire existing privately operated parking lots next to Littleton Station. The lots are slated to be open for public use on July 1, and will feature upgrades such as the MBTA parking payment systems, MBTA officials said in a prepared statement.

Begun in 2009, the Fitchburg line project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2014.
