The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City this week approved a slate of fare increases to take effect next month.
Since 2009, MTA has made small adjustments to the fare structure every other year, though fare increases were put on hold entirely in 2021 due to the pandemic's impact on transit ridership.
The fare and toll increases are projected to generate $117 million in revenue for 2023, MTA officials said in a press release.
The base fare for subway, bus, Staten Island Railway and paratransit services will increase to $2.90 per ride, up from the current $2.75. The price of seven-day unlimited ride MetroCards will increase to $34, up from $33; 30-day unlimited MetroCards will increase to $132 from $127. Single rides will increase to $3.25 from $3.
However, riders can use the OMNY fare payment system to cap fare in any seven-day period, MTA officials added. While MetroCards require upfront payment, the OMNY "best fare" option allows riders to pay as they go until they've spent $34 in any consecutive seven-day period, providing financial flexibility. More than 42% of systemwide MTA riders use OMNY to pay fare, MTA officials said.
Additionally, fare discounts for MTA Long Island Rail Road and MTA Metro-North Railroad will continue. Fares were frozen for Metro-North's West-of-Hudson service, the Pascack Valley Line and Port Jervis Line.
