The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) this week updated its Climate Resilience Roadmap, featuring reports on the agency's progress in meeting climate goals over the past year.
The update comes on the 13th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which devastated the region and led to the MTA launching initial weather resiliency projects. Those projects culminated in the climate roadmap.
The original roadmap outlined the MTA's strategy for mitigating the effects of extreme weather events and climate change on MTA infrastructure, agency officials said. The update calls for more partnership between the MTA and the city of New York's departments of transportation and environmental protection.
The MTA has made progress on flood prevention in the New York City Transit subway system by fixing potential leaks in the tunnel walls, cleaning catch basins and completing pre-storm inspections, MTA officials said.
In the update, the MTA has also identified 10 priority locations in the city where work is necessary to control the impact of stormwater flooding on the community and transit infrastructure. The full update can be read here.
