The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) on May 2 announced the first round of Purple Line small business grant recipients, which are awarded to businesses impacted by construction of the future light-rail line.
Grant awards for the initial phase range from $1,000 to $40,000, for a total of $1 million. Over the course of four years, the program will invest $4 million in businesses along the Purple Line corridor, MDOT officials said in a press release.
More than 450 applications were submitted. Grants were prioritized based on the location of the business and the proximity to construction impacts, and businesses located in areas Maryland has designated as a "sustainable community, priority funding area or opportunity zone."
Over 100 businesses were recipients in this round of funding. A full list can be found here.
The application period for the next round of small business grant funding will open June 2 and are due June 27.
The Purple Line construction is about 76% completed, with more than 80,000 feet of track installed. All 21 future Purple Line stations are under construction.
Once completed, the line will span 16 miles from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Price George's County.
