The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has awarded a $43.3 million contract for advanced preliminary design services for the first phase of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Green Line light-rail extension in Boston.

A joint venture led by AECOM Technology Corp. obtained the contract, which covers the first phase of the joint venture's overall contract for the extension project, AECOM officials said in a prepared statement.

In addition to the preliminary design services, the joint venture will provide final design and construction services for several elements in the project's future phases, including seven new stations, 4.5 miles of track, the Lechmere Station's relocation, reconstruction of bridges along the corridor, and the development of a new maintenance and transportation facility.

The Green Line project will extend light-rail service from the relocated Lechmere Station in East Cambridge to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford.
