Metra's board yesterday approved a $33.9 million contract with IHC Construction Cos. LLC to rebuild and make accessible three stations on the Chicago commuter railroad's Electric Line.
Work on the 79th, 87th and 103rd street stations will include demolition of the existing stairs, head houses, platforms and platform structures. Crews will build new enclosed, ADA-compliant, street-level entrances and lobbies including elevators, new stairs and head houses, new composite deck platforms and new lighting, landscaping and signage, Metra officials said in a press release.
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2023. The rebuilding of each station is expected to take seven months, but work will be performed in stages so that no more than two stations will be closed at the same time, Metra officials said.
The project will be funded by Metra's share of the Rebuild Illinois statewide capital program. IHC Construction will subcontract 30% of the work to disadvantaged business enterprises.
Similar work is being completed at 147th Street/Sibley Boulevard Station, where construction began in May and will finish in summer 2023. Metra also has awarded a fifth contract for Homewood Station, with work expected to start in spring 2023.
