Metra's board yesterday approved a 2023-2027 strategic plan that addresses the Chicago commuter railroad's post-pandemic operational and financial challenges.
Titled My Metra, Our Future, the plan is an update to the 2018-2022 plan, On Track to Excellence, which focused on chronic operating and capital funding shortfalls, Metra officials said in a press release. The updated plan acknowledges those shortfalls as a remaining concern, but also acknowledges new challenges brought on by the pandemic, including new commuting patterns, demand for new service options and attracting and retaining workers.
The new plan contains five goals:
• enhance service to grow ridership and provide mobility choices;
• ensure the Metra experience is safe, easy and enjoyable;
• attract a diverse workforce and invest in Metra employees;
• innovate to become more efficient and effective; and
• be a socially responsible organization committed to equity and sustainability.
The new plan was drafted and finalized using feedback from Metra riders, employees and board members, and regional stakeholders through multiple public meetings and surveys.
