Metra's board last week adopted a passenger code of conduct that identifies prohibited behaviors for anyone using Metra facilities or trains.

Passengers who violate the code by threatening the safety of train crews, other Metra employees or fellow riders risk losing their riding privileges or having their fare cards or apps suspended on the Chicago commuter railroad.

The new code was drafted in response to a new state law, passed in 2023, that gives transit agencies the ability to act against riders who engage in certain conduct, Metra officials said in a press release.

Prohibited conduct includes:
• verbally or physically threatening the safety of another person or others;
• causing or attempting to cause physical harm to others;
• attacking or threatening to attack another person/others with a weapon;
• spitting on or attempting to spit on another person/others;
• sexually assault or attempted assault; and
• engaging in acts of public indecency.

If someone engages in prohibited behaviors, the railroad's employees will contact Metra Police, who will issue a notice to the passenger and schedule a hearing date regarding confiscation of fare cards (or withdrawal of mobile tickets from the Ventra app) and/or suspension of riding privileges. Metra Police can also issue criminal citations, as warranted.
