Metra and Chicago officials yesterday held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Auburn Park Station located on the Rock Island Line on Chicago's south side.

The $28.2 million construction contract was awarded to John Burns Construction Co. The company has committed to allocating 38% of its contract dollars to disadvantaged business enterprise firms, Metra officials said in a press release.

The new station will feature a landscaped plaza with bike racks; a vendor building with storefronts; a "living green wall" along the existing retaining wall; a staircase and two elevators between the street and platform levels; a 480-foot platform with a polycarbonate canopy and two shelters; a snow-melt system on the platform; an 84-space parking lot; and roadway improvements to enhance vehicle access.

Construction is scheduled to wrap up in late 2024.
