Metra yesterday launched a survey of public opinion about proposed revisions to the Chicago commuter-rail system's strategy.

In 2017, Metra adopted its first-ever strategic plan, “On Track to Excellence,” to cover 2018-2022. The plan was prepared when Metra was “starved of capital funding to invest in its system,” Metra officials said in a press release.

While new state and federal funding resources are helping address the transit agency’s capital and operating needs, funding challenges still remain. Metra is also facing the challenge of restoring ridership that fell during the pandemic, as well as addressing equity, climate change and employee retention issues.

As a result, Metra will develop a new strategic plan this summer using feedback from the survey. A draft plan is expected to be released this fall, with a final plan anticipated to be released in early 2023.

The survey can be found here.
