Northeast Illinois regional Commuter Railroad Corp. (Metra) plans to buy 50 acres of vacant land to build a commuter station, train storage yard and parking lot in Elburn, Ill.

The property is located south of and adjacent to Union Pacific Railroad’s tracks, north of Keslinger Road. The project is part of a planned $135 million service extension to Elburn, which would enable Metra to provide western Kane County residents with more convenient links to Chicago, according to a prepared statement.

The extension involves building a third main track and improving signals along one of the country's busiest freight corridors. Metra also plans to build a new station in LaFox and a train storage facility expected to reduce the risk of train delays and traffic congestion at grade crossings.

Construction is expected to begin later this year; Metra plans to have the service in place by the end of 2005.
