Metro Transit-St. Louis today is restoring MetroLink rail service at all Blue Line stations. The service was suspended after record rainfall and flooding that occurred three weeks ago.
Blue Line service restoration has been particularly difficult because vital signal, communications and fiber-optics systems were damaged or destroyed by the floodwaters, Metro Transit-St. Louis officials said in a press release.
Because of those signal and switching issues, operating partial service on the Blue Line has meant those trains can't connect to Metro Transit's Red Line trains. Today, the transit agency is implementing a modified single-track operation that will allow all trains to serve all stations.
"It is truly remarkable that I can say less than four weeks after we experienced this historic rainfall and devastating flash flooding event, that both Blue Line and Red Line trains will be serving the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station and all of the MetroLink stations on the light rail system," said Taulby Roach, president and CEO of Bi-State Development, which operates Metro Transit-St. Louis.
Agency officials estimated damage costs at $40 million. Most of the damage is concentrated along a 2-mile section of track between Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station and Delmar Loop Station.
Metro Transit-St. Louis is seeking state and federal emergency funding to help offset those costs.
