On Tuesday, a third set of M-8 rail cars entered service on MTA Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven line, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy announced in a prepared statement.

The launch brings to 130 the number of weekly train runs featuring the new cars. A total of 26 M-8s, made by Kawasaki Rail Car Inc., have entered service on the New Haven line.

“Connecticut is investing heavily in rail improvements,” Malloy said. “I believe that this is the best possible way to encourage commuters to stop driving to work alone and start using our ever-improving mass transit systems.”

Of the system’s 380 M-8s now on order, the first 38 are being built in Kobo, Japan. The remaining cars will be built at Kawasaki’s Lincoln, Neb., plant, state officials said.
