In 2006, MTA Metro-North Railroad posted its highest-ever ridership and on-time performance. The agency carried 76.9 million passengers, a 3.2 percent increase compared with 2005’s total, and recorded on-time performance of 97.8 percent.

Ridership rose 5.7 percent to 1.4 million on the Port Jervis Line; 4.1 percent to 14.7 million on the Hudson Line; 3.1 percent to 34.9 million on the New Haven Line; 2.6 percent to 25.4 million on the Harlem Line; and 1.9 percent to 423,000 on the Pascack Valley Line.

And, ridership grew in all market segments. Traditional commutation ridership to and from Manhattan increased 2.5 percent. However, more than half of Metro-North passengers now use the system for off-peak trips, reverse commutes and intermediate trips. Last year, off-peak ridership rose 4 percent; reverse-commute ridership increased 2 percent; and intermediate trips grew 3 percent compared with 2005.
