On Dec. 5, MTA Metro-North Railroad plans to begin providing service to the recently built Fairfield Metro Station on the New Haven Line.

Located between the Fairfield and Bridgeport, Conn., stations, the Fairfield Metro Station was built by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) and the town of Fairfield, Metro-North officials said in a prepared statement. ConnDOT owns the station and accompanying parking lot, which can accommodate up to 1,400 vehicles. Fusco Management Co. will operate the site for the department.

Fairfield Metro is the first new station on the New Haven Line since the State Street Station opened in 2002. The busiest single rail line in the United States, the New Haven Line registered 37.3 million riders in 2010, a 2.8 percent increase compared with 2009, Metro-North officials said.

Metro-North provides rail service in Connecticut under a contract with ConnDOT.
