Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) have issued a request for qualifications for firms to build and finance GO Transit's Lakeshore East-West Corridor expansion project in the Toronto area. The project calls for infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the planned expansion of GO rail service on the Lakeshore East line. The scope of work includes adding a fourth track between Don River Bridge and Gerrard Street in the Toronto area, widening three bridges, installing retaining walls and updating the Danforth GO Station. The RFQ also calls for three culver extensions. The proposed Lakeshore East expansion is part of Ontario's GO Regional Express Rail (RER) program, which includes the electrification of core GO segments to provide faster and more frequent service. As part of GO RER, weekly trips across the entire rail network would grow to 6,000 — from the current 1,500 — by 2024 or 2025, IO officials said in a press release.Major infrastructure upgrades are needed to make way for the service increase. Also needed to accommodate increased service are GO station modifications, grade crossing improvements and new locomotives and train control systems. In fall 2018, Metrolinx and IO plan to issue a request for proposals to qualifying teams.
