The Metropolitan Council will host two community meetings next week to discuss a resolution for locating freight-rail tracks in the design of the Minneapolis area's Metro Green Line Extension.Officials will present engineering concepts for the freight-rail line at meetings slated for July 17 in Minneapolis and July 18 in St. Louis Park. The concepts explore possibilities for co-locating freight- and light-rail tracks in Minneapolis, as well as options to reroute freight-rail traffic in St. Louis Park to make way for light-rail tracks. The relocation concepts will be different than the one described in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, council officials said in a post on its website. Both co-location and relocation options would impact residences and businesses, including freight railroads, they said. Feedback from the meetings will be shared with members of the project's business and community advisory committees, the Corridor Management Committee and the Metropolitan Council. The Metro Green Line Extension involves a 15-mile light-rail route between Eden Prairie and downtown Minneapolis that will pass through Minnetonka and St. Louis Park.
