Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.’s Metro Transit recently selected Royal Philips Electronics’ MIFARE® contactless smart card technology to replace magstripe cards, used to improve transit ticketing.



The technology includes computers, software, communications, ticket-vending machines, platform, on-board smart card validators and hand-held read/write devices, and will be equipped with Cubic Tri-Reader architecture.



Provided by Cubic Transportation Systems Inc., the automatic fare collection system would be the nation’s first regional ticketing system that accepts smart cards for fare payment for light rail, city bus and future bus rapid transit, according to a prepared statement.



Scheduled for integration by year’s end, the smart cards electronically store travel details and enable passengers quick access to the transport network.
