NJ Transit, SEPTA mark milestones

New Jersey Transit recently received the first Multilevel III commuter-rail vehicle from Alstom.  

The commuter-rail agency has ordered 374 of the cars from Alstom, marking a new generation of higher-capacity, more reliable and more comfortable trains, NJ Transit officials said in a press release. The new double-deck trains will replace legacy single-level cars that have been in service for more than 40 years, they said. 

The vehicles are designed to travel 110 mph, up to 30 mph faster than the previous fleet. They feature such amenities as USB charging ports in every row and digital signs that inform passengers about upcoming stops. 

The first vehicle is a power car that was developed by Alstom in close partnership with NJ Transit to enable train consists to operate without locomotives. The power cars include electric propulsion and more than 100 seats. 

Meanwhile, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) on April 10 held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new $60.6 million Ardmore Station on the Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line. Service to the new station began on March 23. 

The station was rebuilt as part of SEPTA’s station accessibility program, which in part calls for adding elevators, ramps and high-level platforms. The station was last rebuilt in 1957 to replace the original, 1870s-era building. 

Ardmore is one of the most heavily traveled stations on the Paoli/Thorndale Line. The station now features a new inbound buildingoutbound shelter, and new lighting, signage and landscaping.
