New Jersey Transit has proposed changing a long-standing practice of allowing non-union transit employees unlimited, free travel on its trains and buses.

If approved by the NJ Transit board on Oct. 15, the new policy would take effect Jan. 1, NJ Transit officials said in a prepared statement. The policy was proposed as part of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's initiative to increase accountability and transparency at state agencies.

"Moving forward, NJ Transit must continue to sufficiently consider the interests of fare-paying customers and taxpayers," said Executive Director James Weinstein.

Similar reforms have eliminated free travel privileges for employees at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the NJ Turnpike Authority and the Delaware River Port Authority.
