Rail News: Passenger Rail

NJ Transit makes room for more riders on Hudson-Bergen line

Starting this week, New Jersey Transit will increase weekday evening capacity on the Hudson-Bergen light-rail line.

Twelve trains will operate with two cars instead of one, which will double seating capacity on the weekday evening trips. Capacity on the route was increased in response to rider feedback received as part of the agency's Scorecard initiative, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.

"By converting single-car trains to doubles during the evening, we can keep pace with the line's growing ridership while improving the overall customer experience on our system," said Executive Director James Weinstein.

Since the launch of Hudson-Bergen light-rail service in 2000, ridership on the line has grown steadily. In the past seven years, daily passenger trips have doubled to more than 45,000.
