New Jersey Transit yesterday announced it exercised an existing contract option with Alstom Transportation Inc. for the purchase of 200 more multilevel rail cars and 12 ALP-45 dual-powered locomotives for an additional $1.1 billion.
The option brings the total number of new rail cars that NJ Transit has purchased from Alstom since 2018 to 374. NJ Transit's board authorized the purchase of more rail cars and the locomotives in May.
The additional cars will replace older, less reliable Comet II, IV and V single level cars to standardize the fleet and increase seating capacity and safety, NJ Transit officials said in a press release. The new locomotives will replace some of the transit agency's older, diesel only engines.
NJ Transit's rail-car contract with Alstom includes a remaining option for the purchase of 50 additional multilevel rail cars that may be purchased at a later date.
Both the rail car and locomotive procurements are part of a fleet modernization plan, which aims to fully modernize the fleet by 2031, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.
