NJ Transit receives more than $71.4 million in federal emergency relief funding

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will award New Jersey Transit more than $71.4 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery funds for various repair and resiliency projects.

These projects include recovery and resiliency work currently underway, such as the elevation of key substations in Hoboken, Kearny and Bay Head.

"With this funding, we will be making critical investments to protect against future weather events and ensure a more resilient commuter rail system for our residents," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said in a press release.

To date, the FTA has given NJ Transit a total of $1.724 billion in public transportation emergency relief funds following Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast in October 2012. That money has been used to fill the Hoboken Long Slip Canal above base flood elevation, build a new train storage facility, and complete several other projects.
