New Jersey Transit’s board has approved the purchase of 36 additional multilevel rail cars to increase seating capacity, mechanical reliability and amenities.
The purchase continues to advance the agency's plan to phase out the oldest single-level cars from its fleet, NJ Transit officials said in a news release.
The contract draws on options on the existing contract with Alstom Transportation at a cost not to exceed $170 million plus 5% for contingencies, subject to the availability of funds.
“This significant investment brings the total of new multilevel rail cars we’ve purchased since 2018 to 174,” said NJ Transit President and CEO Kevin Corbett.
The multilevel cars will offer several benefits over the older single-level cars. The vehicle maximum speed will increase to 110 mph and the new cars will be compliant with the latest federal regulations, including positive train control.
The multilevel cars are electric multiple units that are self-propelled and don’t require a separate locomotive. Electric motors are incorporated within one or a number of the vehicles.
NJ Transit already has orders in for 138 new multilevel vehicles, which are in production. The first vehicles are scheduled to arrive for testing later this year.
