New Jersey Transit yesterday approved more than $917 million, plus 10% for contingencies, to overhaul its fleet of 429 multilevel rail cars.

The multilevel I and II cars — some of which are approaching 20 years of service — are due for their recommended midlife overhaul. NJ Transit also is in the process of procuring 374 new multilevel III cars, and the overhaul of existing fleet will ensure compatibility and interoperability between the different generations of rail cars, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.

The transit agency will use an expression of interest (EOI) process in which parties can submit their qualifications, capabilities and relevant project experience. NJ Transit will then develop a list of contractors to participate in the final procurement and contract award process. The EOI is not yet available on NJ Transit's website.

The selected contractor will overhaul 329 multilevel I cars, delivered between 2006-2009, and 100 multilevel II vehicles, delivered between 2012-2013. The contractor will ensure the rail cars meet a state of good repair and improve systems as needed to ensure reliability and compatibility with the new multilevel III cars, NJ Transit officials said.
