NJ Transit's Weinstein proposes new accountability measures

At New Jersey Transit's March 9 board meeting, Executive Director James Weinstein plans to unveil a new set of accountability and transparency measures that are designed to keep the public informed of the transit agency’s performance.

The "Scorecard" initiative would use metrics to set agency-wide standards of accountability and create transparency for the public, helping NJ Transit make strategic decisions that maximize its resources and illustrate how the agency is managing its finances, Weinstein said in a prepared statement.

"For the first time, the taxpayers of New Jersey and our customers alike will have a clear window into how we are performing," he said.

The system of metrics, now under development, would provide a baseline to measure the agency’s performance in customer satisfaction, safety and security, fiscal health, service accountability, and workforce engagement. The baseline also would use information gathered from quarterly customer surveys.

Weinstein has proposed that the initiative begin in July to coincide with the agency's 2012 fiscal year.
