Yesterday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jay Walder and other local officials marked the completion of the first phase of the No. 7 subway extension at Hudson Yards in Manhattan.

Funded by the city and managed by the MTA, the $2.1 billion project is designed to introduce MTA New York City Transit subway service to the yards area and help transform the region into a mix of commercial, residential, retail, open and recreational space. The service will terminate at a new 34th Street station, but tunneling work will continue to 25th Street to accommodate train storage.

Tunneling, excavation and underpinning work for the 8th Avenue subway line is under way so new tunnels can tie into the existing 7 Line tail tracks at Times Square. The MTA expects to complete tunneling in spring 2010, when work will begin on station entrances and finishes, as well as support facilities. Construction of the tunnels and 34th Street station cavern is being managed by S3II Tunnel Constructors, a joint venture comprising J.F. Shea Construction Inc., SKANSKA USA Civil Northeast Inc. and Schiavone Construction Co. Inc.

The new subway service is scheduled to open in December 2013.
