New Ontario light-rail line between Mississauga, Brampton in the works

Ontario's government on Tuesday announced plans for a Hurontario-Main light-rail transit (LRT) project that would create 14 miles of track between the cities of Mississauga and Brampton.

The line would have 26 stops, with three stations in downtown Mississauga and two in downtown Brampton. Part of the government's 10-year plan to invest more than $130 billion (in Canadian dollars) in public infrastructure, the rail line would provide a link between the region's existing transit lines, such as GO Transit's Kitchener, Milton and Lakeshore West lines, Metrolinx officials said in a press release.

The LRT project would also move passengers faster than existing bus service, officials said.

Metrolinx Chief Executive Officer Bruce McCuaig said the venture fits into the area's "long-term vision for an integrated, sustainable transit network" connecting the greater Toronto and Hamilton area.

"The Hurontario-Main LRT will connect more people to transit and give them more access to the places they want to go," he said in a prepared statement.

The news follows the government's announcement of a plan to create a new 3.7-mile section of track for GO Transit's Barrie line.
