On Friday, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) officials and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine inaugurated service for Port Authority-Trans Hudson’s (PATH) new rail cars.

The first seven cars from a 340-car order now are in operation. The car procurement is part of the agency's 10-year modernization program that also calls for a new signal system, station upgrades and a new station in Harrison, N.Y.

“The new cars we will begin to put into service today, coupled with the new signal system and 10-car platforms, will allow us to increase PATH's capacity by 20 percent,” said PANYNJ Deputy Executive Director Susan Bass Levin in a prepared statement.

The cars are being built by Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. and all are scheduled to enter service by 2011. The cars will feature state-of-the-art braking and onboard camera systems, and event recorders.
