Last week, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recognized its agencies contributions to a safer work environment with the 15th annual Chairman’s Safety Awards.

For employee safety achievements, Gold Awards were presented to teams at MTA New York City Transit (NYCT), MTA Bus, MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), MTA Metro-North Railroad and MTA Bridges and Tunnels.

MTA recognized LIRR and Metro-North for instituting safety committees that have resulted in 45 percent and 42 percent fewer injuries, respectively. LIRR’s committee focused on safety issues related to infrastructure and rolling stock, while Metro-North’s committee introduced a safety hotline and safety advisories of potential workplace hazards, MTA officials said in a press release.

NYCT’s Department of Subways received a Gold Award for implementing the FASTRACK program, which “has increased safety and productivity exponentially,” they said. The FASTRACK initiative enables workers to complete subway maintenance more quickly by suspending service over certain line segments.
