The North Carolina Department of Transportation last month announced it is updating a feasibility study for passenger rail in Wilmington.
The Southeastern North Carolina Passenger Rail Study evaluates potential service connecting Raleigh to Wilmington along the NC-Line. The study will consider two alternatives: a route that passes through Goldsboro following the CSX AC-Line; or a route that passes through Fayetteville following the CSX A-Line. Both are included in the state rail plan, and NCDOT will revise cost estimates, ridership forecasts and other considerations for future planning, NCDOT officials said in a press release.
The updated study is expected to be completed by year's end, at which point it will be shared with CSX.
Passenger-rail service already exists to Raleigh, Fayetteville and other nearby cities. However, the two lines run north-south and do not connect to each other in the southeastern North Carolina region. Wilmington does not have passenger-rail service.
