Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx awarded a C$1.4 billion contract to North End Connectors to design, build and finance the Yonge North Subway extension tunneling project.

Two separate 4-mile tunnels will run from Finch Station on the Toronto Transit Commission Line 1 to south of Langstaff Road in Markham, where the subway extension will rise to a surface level segment for another 1 mile, IO officials said in a press release.

The scope of work includes tunneling; design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, the twin tunnels, headwalls for emergency exit buildings and stations; support of excavation for emergency exit buildings; and procurement and installation of tunnel boring machines and precast concrete tunnel liners.

The subway extension tunneling project is being delivered as a design-build-finance contract using IO's public-private-partnership model, IO officials said.

The North End Connectors team includes Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc.; Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd.; Ghella Canada Ltd.; EXP Services Inc.; TYPSA Inc.; National Bank Financial; Aecon Concessions; and Partnerships SpA.
