Rail News: Passenger Rail

Ontario to buy CN property for GO Transit Kitchener extension

The Ontario government has reached an agreement-in-principle with CN to purchase property for the future construction of dedicated passenger-rail track along the existing Metrolinx GO Transit Kitchener Line.

The agreement is the latest step in Ontario's plan to build rapid two-way and all-day GO Transit service between Kitchener and Toronto, Ontario government officials said in a press release.

The Kitchener extension project will add about 25 miles of new dedicated GO Transit two-way tracks, signal upgrades, bridge work and platform expansions along the existing corridor. Go Transit currently runs on CN tracks to Kitchener.

Once the dedicated GO tracks are in place along the Kitchener Line, Go Transit will be able to run two-way, all-day service seven days a week between Union Station in Toronto and Bramalea, Mount Pleasant and Kitchener. In the meantime, Metrolinx has made agreements with CN to increase passenger service on the existing Kitchener Line, beginning Nov. 23.
