The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has started construction on the track and guideway structures for the new AirTrain system between the New Jersey Newark Liberty International Airport train station and the P4 parking lot station.

The new $3.5 billion automated and cable-propelled AirTrain system will replace the existing and outdated AirTrain, which opened in 1996 at the airport, PANYNJ officials said in a press release. Passenger service on the new AirTrain is expected to begin in 2030. It will be able to carry 50,000 passengers per day, up from the current 33,000.

The current construction phase will require consistent AirTrain outages on week days, authority officials said. PANYNJ will offer bus shuttles in place of AirTrain service between P4 and the airport train station that links to New Jersey Transit and Amtrak services.

AirTrain service will operate normally during weekends, PANYNJ officials said.
