Pittsburgh Regional Transit schedules escalator work, earns 'military friendly' employer designation

Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) last week announced plans to begin replacing nine escalators at three downtown light-rail stations later this month.

Crews will start the $13.5 million project on April 24 by replacing three of four escalators at Steel Plaza Station. After that, escalators will be replaced at Wood Street Station in fall, First Avenue Station in early 2024 and Steel Plaza Station in summer 2024.

The escalators will be out of service while work is being completed, PRT officials said in a press release.

Meanwhile, PRT recently was named a "Military Friendly" employer for the second consecutive year by Victory Media. The designation is awarded to organizations that demonstrate a commitment to creating sustainable and meaningful benefits for the military community, PRT officials said.

The transit agency provides tuition reimbursement, military leave and access to a veterans' employee resource group to its military employees.

Victory Media evaluates organizations based on their programs, policies and outcomes in support of veterans, military personnel and dependent families, they added. Awards are based on a survey that measures organizational performance in various categories, including hiring and onboarding practices, benefits, culture and community engagement.
