Pittsburgh port authority's agreement with Steelers, casino extends free-fare zone

A three-year funding agreement with the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL football team and Rivers Casino will enable the Port Authority of Allegheny County to provide free rides on the “T” light-rail system between downtown Pittsburgh and Allegheny Station.
The agreement will extend the T’s free-fare zone to Allegheny Station when it opens on March 25, port authority officials said in a prepared statement. The light-rail vehicle station is near Heinz Field and the casino on the North Shore.
The pact is the second recent agreement to extend the T’s free fare zone, which traditionally covered the Golden Triangle portion of downtown Pittsburgh. In December, the port authority reached a similar agreement with the Stadium Authority of the city of Pittsburgh to extend the free fare zone to North Side Station.
“Expanding the T’s free fare zone to Allegheny and North Side stations stretches the borders for downtown Pittsburgh and creates a strong connection to current and future development in the North Shore,” said Jeremy Waldrup, president and chief executive officer of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.
Both T stations are due to open March 25 with the start of light-rail service on the subway extension.
