The Delaware River Port Authority has started a $1.34 million rail-grinding project on the Port Authority Transit Corp. (PATCO) subway line that connects Philadelphia to Camden County, New Jersey.
Crews will perform rail grinding on 18 total miles of PATCO's eastbound and westbound mainline tracks, which each span 14.2-miles, authority officials said in a press release. The work includes precision grinding of PATCO's interlockings.
The rail grinding project is part of an ongoing, two-phase cleanliness and maintenance program. During the completed first phase, which occurred over the summer, overnight service frequency was reduced to allow for crews to work on tracks.
In the second phase, which began Sept. 1 and is set to run through March 2026, all overnight service has been suspended. During the overnight shutdowns, crews are completing projects that are difficult to perform while any trains are operating, such as rail grinding, deep cleaning, track, electrical and signal work, PATCO officials said.
Many sections of PATCO's tracks are original to the 56-year-old system, making ongoing precision maintenance essential to keeping infrastructure in good condition, they said.
