San Diego MTS to fine riders for refusing to give up priority seating

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) board last week approved a new ordinance amendment that authorizes the agency to fine riders who refuse to vacate priority seating for seniors and people with disabilities.

Under the new ordinance, declining to vacate priority seating could result in a citation and a $25 fine for a first offense, MTS officials said in a press release. The new rule is scheduled to take effect Feb. 13.

"This new policy gives our operators and security personnel another tool to help our passengers with limited mobility," said MTS Chief Executive Officer Paul Jablonski. "Previously we were only allowed to request that passengers vacate their seat. We could not enforce or compel a person to move. Now we have that authority."

A California Senate bill passed in October 2015 authorizes state transit agencies to establish mandatory move policies, MTS officials said.
