Santa Clara VTA funds more Caltrain safety upgrades

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s (VTA) board recently authorized $5.8 million for Caltrain safety improvements.

Proceeds will cover modifications to grade crossing gates; the installation of guard rails, fencing, pedestrian gates, emergency swing gates, sidewalks, crossing panels, and tactile warning panels; and modifications to crossings within the joint powers board-owned segment between Sunnyvale and Palo Alto, Calif.

Shimmick Transit will complete safety upgrades at eight Caltrain crossings between Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Work will start in March 2010 and conclude in March 2011.

The contract covers the second phase of the Caltrain safety improvement program. The first phase — which involved signing and striping 36 crossings between Palo Alto and Gilroy — was completed in March.
