On Friday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced its board agreed to install Richard Sarles as the agency’s new chief executive officer and general manager.

Board members “will have more to say on this matter” at a meeting on Jan. 27, when a vote on the appointment will be taken, according to a statement issued by WMATA.

Sarles has been serving as interim GM since March 2010. He has more than 25 years of transit industry experience with New Jersey Transit — where he retired last year after serving as executive director since 2007 — Amtrak and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. From 2002 to 2007, Sarles served as NJ Transit’s assistant executive director for capital programs and planning. Prior to that, he was an Amtrak vice president from 1996 to 2002.
