Yesterday, the new Sky Train™ service opened to the public at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).

The new service provides airport passengers with a seamless connection between Terminal 4, East Economy parking and Valley Metro's light-rail service at 44th Street and Washington, PHX officials said in a prepared statement.

"The PHX Sky Train's connection to light rail paves the way for convenient, multi-modal transportation to and from the airport, and is a true point of pride for the city," said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton.

Travelers using Terminal 4, which serves 80 percent of Sky Harbor's passengers, will access the free PHX Sky Train from Level 3. Those connecting to Valley Metro light-rail lines will take a five-minute ride between Terminal 4 and 44th Street Station. Trains depart every three to four minutes.

The electrically powered Sky Train will operate 24/7. By early 2015, the service is slated to extend to Terminal 3 with a walkway to Terminal 2. A final stage of construction will extend the service to the airport's rental car center.
