Sound Transit in Seattle and Metrolinx in Toronto both launched new light-rail lines in recent days.
On Dec. 6, Sound Transit began passenger service on the Link 1 Line light-rail extension from Angle Lake to Federal Way, Washington. The extension adds nearly 8 miles to the 1 Line and includes new stations at Kent Des Moines, Star Lake and downtown Federal Way, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.
The Link 1 Line now extends 41 miles from the Lynnwood City Center north of Seattle to Federal Way. Its completion marks Sound Transit's fifth light-rail extension in the past three years. Voters approved the Federal Way extension in 2008 as part of the Sound Transit 2 ballot measure.
Kiewit Corp., the project's design-builder, broke ground on the extension in summer 2020, Sound Transit officials said. The $2.5 billion project was supported by a $790 million federal grant and a $629.5 million low-interest federal loan from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Meanwhile, Metrolinx began operating its new Line 6 Finch West light-rail service on Dec. 7. The Line 6 Finch West extends 6.4 miles from Humber College Station to Finch West Station with 16 stops between them. Construction on line began in 2019 and was originally slated for completion in 2023, according to a report from The Canadian Press.
The line's total cost, including the construction contract to Mosaic Transit Group and a 30-year maintenance contract to Bombardier Transportation, was originally estimated at C$2.5 billion. However, the final cost came in at C$3.7 billion, according to the report.
Metrolinx has handed the line's operations over to the Toronto Transit Commission.
