Sound Transit advances timeframe for opening Link light-rail extension

Sound Transit's Federal Way Link light-rail extension is now projected to open as soon as winter 2025.

The announcement comes after the agency's board approved plans to move the Federal Way extension opening date ahead of the 2 Line Crosslake Connection opening, now slotted for early 2026.

The 1 Line extension from Angle Lake to Federal Way in the Seattle area will soon undergo final testing, while work continues on the 2 Line Crosslake Connection, Sound Transit officials said in a press release. The reconfigured phased approach will allow the agency to open both projects as soon as possible.

“This resequencing of opening dates reflects the actual status of each of the projects and allows us to continue moving them both forward in the most efficient way possible," said Sound Transit Chair Dave Somers.

Sound Transit has completed system integration testing on the Federal Way extension and is ready to move into pre-revenue testing. Once open, the extension will add nearly 8 miles of light rail and three new stations.
