Sound Transit finalizes plans for Link light-rail extension

Sound Transit completed the next step toward the extension of its Link light-rail line with the release of the federal Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) late last week.

The proposed Lynwood Link Extension project would begin in Lynwood, Wash., and run 8.5 miles south to the Northgate Mall station in Seattle, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.

The new line would have four stations in north Seattle, Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace and Lynwood. The project is estimated to cost $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion, with construction scheduled to begin in 2018. The extension would open in 2023.

The release of the FEIS follows more than five years of environmental studies examining various route combinations and station locations.
