Sound Transit has awarded a design-build management contract to the South County Transit Partners joint venture for the 7.8-mile light-rail extension to Federal Way, Washington.

The team is composed of Mott MacDonald and SNC-Lavalin. The agreement initially covers the preconstruction period up to the award of the actual design-build contract, SNC-Lavalin officials said in a press release.

For this first phase of the project, South County Transit Partners will support the process leading up to the execution of the design-build contract, which is valued at $1 billion. For the second phase, the joint venture will provide project management services during design and construction.

Services and responsibilities under the project management contract include resident engineering, project controls and scheduling, change management, technical support and inspection, and quality assurance and quality control activities. The value of the project management agreement was not disclosed.

The Federal Way project calls for extending light-rail service from the Angle Lake Station in SeaTac, Washington, to a transit center in Federal Way. The extension is slated to open for service in 2024.
