Rail News: Passenger Rail

Sound Transit to open new Tacoma station

Today, Sound Transit and city of Tacoma officials will mark the opening of a new Commerce Street light-rail station in downtown Tacoma. Located at 11th and Commerce streets, the station marks the sixth stop on the 1.6-mile Tacoma Link that serves as a major transit connector in the downtown area.

The station includes two 40-foot platforms, platform lighting, accessibility ramps, security cameras and passenger shelters. The facility opens at a time when Tacoma Link ridership is growing; last year, daily ridership on the light-rail line increased 16 percent to 3,330, Sound Transit officials said in a prepared statement.

Sound Transit completed the Tacoma Link line in 2003, connecting Tacoma’s downtown business district with commuter-rail and bus service at Tacoma Dome Station. Last year, the city of Tacoma proposed adding a Tacoma Link station north of a convention center station to expand commuter access to the business district and improve mobility in the downtown area.
